PageRank – What the Majority of Online Marketers Don’t Know About It

he dual Nature of PageRank
PageRank is simply a way for Google to measure the relative importance of each web page in its index, based on the frequency they’re referred to throughout the internet. A more technical approach defines PageRank as being a link analysis algorithm.
But there are two different variations of this mechanism, and we shall explore the dual nature of PageRank; one being the system that Google exclusively employs and which we refer to as Real PageRank, and the other, which is known as Toolbar PageRank, having values from 0 to 10 and that is employed by webmasters to assess Google’s own assessment of any particular website.
Although both variants operate on a numerical basis, the real PageRank is expressed with larger figures reaching even millions, as opposed to Toolbar PR with the tenth grade being the highest.
According to the popular toolbar PR mechanism, all the indexed pages are separated into 11 different ranges, based on their appointed value.
Using, as an example, two web pages, one with a PageRank score of 2, and other with 4, the difference between them is not simply 2 in PageRank parlance, but is much, much higher.
Unfortunately no one knows how Google calculates the PR value of a page or where are those breaking points – that determine the 11 grades – built.
Still, there is one insight that Google give us to how it calculates a webpage real PR:
Each toolbar PageRank level is exponentially greater than the one before it, thus being more difficult to achieve. In other words What was sufficient to go from PR2 to PR 3 level, won’t be enough to go from PR3 to PR4.
These are some helpful steps to help you understand the mechanism more readily:
1. Google assesses web pages, not websites.
2. The grades shown on the toolbar marry up to a wider range on real PageRank, meaning that the real PageRank values may vary little, or may vary widely.
3. In the ranking process an amount of back links that all originate from the one web domain, will be given a low PageRank rating of 1.
4. Every webpage has an initial, small PageRank refered to as (1-d), where d is a variable determined by Google named “damping factor” and when was first released it had a value of 0.85. This gives the initial real PageRank of every page a 0.15 value.
5. To facilitate a web page getting to the high end of the toolbar register, one must consistently keep increasing the quantity of incoming links to one’s site.
6. Every three months, the PageRank Toolbar is changed. In the meantime, the Real PageRank gets continuous updates, meaning that it is always more current. This explains why certain web pages appear higher in the search engine report pages than other web pages with higher figures. This highlights another difference in the dual nature of PageRank.
7. Real PageRank is also programmed to analyze the link structure design of a web page.
The way Google works: After stacking up a considerable number of web pages in its index, Google then rates these pages according to the trust and popularity they enjoy online – expressed by the number of links pointing back to them. Of course there are the on-page factors that should be considered, also.
PageRank Dynamics in Action:
- A web page receives PageRank by getting inbound links from other pages.
- Links that emanate from other pages in the same website, or that come from completely different domains are given similar ratings providing those other pages bear the same PageRank values.
- Linking out will not bankrupt your PageRank stock. In fact, Google encourages linking out to quality content resources and awards this practice with enhanced rankings.
- To fully understand the PageRank process, you must also be aware that when a PageRank that is directed on to another web page, it is first divided by the total number of links on the host web page.
- Lastly, owing to the damping factor, an incoming link is only allotted 85% of its value.
